Great location , I got a Seaview room. I would suggest us hearing the waves crash and take a walk on the beach, safe area, close to shops and restaurants, friendly staff, especially the front desk all shifts ! wonderful staff at the breakfast Buffett highly recommend adding that to your room, clean large room with updated shower only 20 minutes to the downtown city center reasonably price compared to Dublin prices

The room we had was fine, not a special sea view as we’d understood we were having but ok until we looked out of the window and our eyes were met with a dirty roof with lots of pipes and airconditioning boxes with just a slither of a glimpse of the sea. We had reason complain about the bill as they charged us (at checkin not checkout) more than we were quoted on the phone before left home. The receptionist was totally unwilling to budge on the price she charged us. In fact we noticed when overhearing other guests complaining there was no compromise. Would we go there again? NO. Would we return to the Clontarf Castle? You can bet we will!

Good and bad!

Hard to gauge what points to give as some things good some bad. The room was very nice, comfortable, clean and spacious. But we had to ask for extra towels, tea and coffee as there were 3 of us, sometimes we didn’t get any tea, coffee etc. Had to ask for glasses, ironing board and iron, couldn’t phone for room service as told by reception’ maybe your phone doesn’t work?’. So no room service for us. There are no drinking water facilities so had to go to the shop to buy some! The sink plug was missing, told by receptionist’ we don’t have any! The swimming pool had clumps of hair on the side so we decided not to use it. My friend’s party was great but the food was very disappointing piled high on 1 plate per table, all muddled together, no idea what was what. We ate in the restaurant twice and the food and service was very good. The carvery was good but nothing like the picture advertising it, we had no Brussels sprouts or Yorkshire pudding. Breakfast was very good.

Lovely stay for a lovely occasion

My husband and I wanted to celebrate our first anniversary somewhere nice and quite but still close to the City , so i phoned the Marine hotel just to enquiry about rates and availability as it was just before Christmas . The lovely girl on the phone very patiently told me all about the different room types and we decided to book a sea view room there and then as prices were more than reasonable for that time of the year . I passingly mentioned the occasion but didnt fuss about it . To our surprise when we checked in we found our room decorated as a “honeymoon” suite with some chocolate plate and towels folded into swans!! I couldnt believe they remembered ! Due to the Receptionist’s reccomendation we went with the Dinner bed and breakfast package which gave us the option to dine in on the night . Both food and service were exceprional and coming from a picky eater it means a lot ! The next morning we asked about some activities around the hotel and were told to see Howth, a lovely fishing village located just 10 mins from the hotel . It’s full of fresh fish and seafood restaurants but we decided to have dinner in the Schooner lounge again that night . Over all an amazing stay made that much more special due to the lovely staff and the little surprise . Will deffinitely be back.

Filthy

Booked to stay here for six nights. The room I stayed in was nothing like the pictures shown on the website, it was dark, cold and filthy! The first night my son found his bed had dirty sheets and when I lifted the bottom sheet the smell from the mattress protector was revolting plus it had lots of black hairs stuck to it. I asked Margey (the receptionist) if she could get the sheets changed. When I returned to the room, the bottom sheet had been tucked back in, still had the stains on it and the same mattress protector was on the bed. I went back to Margey who said she would have a word with her manager, the bed sheets were then changed. I asked Margey where the safe was in my room as that was what I signed up for, she answered I’m new here, I don’t know. In fact this was the standard answer from any staff when I queried anything in my room. There was in fact, no safe in my room, which meant I had to keep passports etc with me at all times. One towel was all that was left in the room each day for all three of us to share. The bathroom was also very basic. I could not run a bath as the taps were stuck down and the shower either ran scalding hot water or cold water with a shower curtain that constantly stuck to my skin when showering - revolting! On entering the hotel customers had to walk through a plume of smoke as this is where the smokers stood and smoked. The swimming pool was disgusting, I could see dirt/mud at the bottom of the pool and the changing rooms were very basic and so dirty. The steam room was also filthy and the sauna, well it was a warm area but definitely didn’t work as a sauna. There was a mountain of dirty towels in the corridor outside the steam room. When I complained to the male receptionist, his response was he had previously worked in 1 star hotels which were better than the Marine and his response to my complaints was ‘he was new here and didn’t know’ or ‘he didn’t give an flying eff’. In fact most of what came from his mouth included ‘effin’. He told me the Marine hotel was the sister hotel to the Grand Hotel in Malahide as I mentioned I may try the Grand on my next trip. Hmmm?? On my last night, I went into the bar where on ordering a glass of wine, I actually had to teach the barman how to use a wine bottle opener, neither him nor the girl behind the bar had any idea how to use the bottle opener. Makes me wonder who writes the positive reviews? Never again!!
